Protest For Progress Exhibition.

Round Lemon would like to introduce to you ZEST Hall’s very first exhibition: Protest for Progress! Brought to you in partnership with Leeds City Museum, this exhibition features work from 32 artists across the globe, as well as showcasing two collections from Leeds City Museum.

Launched on the 28th June 2020, the exhibition marks 51 years since the Stonewall riots in New York City - a monumental protest which saw the uprising of the LGBT+ community against their long battle with police brutality. With the recent protests and the uprising of the #blacklivesmatter movement, we felt that this exhibition could not be more timely, as we continue to fight against police brutality in a system which is oppressive to minority groups.

This exhibition aims to represent minority voices, focusing on protests, rebellion and change. With works ranging from photojournalism, paintings, spoken word, installation, film and performance, we hope to use our platform to educate and visualise a better future.

You can view the exhibition by clicking here.

Our favourite entries…

…From the Round Lemon team.

My favourite work is Slava Mogutin’s

‘My Existence = My Resistance’.

There is something so raw about the depiction of the youth culture in Russia and I think it really speaks to today’s climate. The youth in a sense are the most powerful in society

Bethan Jayne

I love the complimentation of the poetic narrative and the dark inky visuals in Manasvini’s Zine ‘Gray’. Even though the watercolour & ink drawings are more gestural rather than illustrative, I feel they’re really successful in evoking a darker, more oppressive sense of humanity.

Carmela Vienna

I really like ‘Sugar and Spice’, submitted by Keith Buswell for its complex simplicity. The juxtaposition of delicate but vibrant flowers in relation to ideals around gender, I find really interesting.

One of my favourite works is Harsha Vadlamani’s ‘Chalo Dilli’, simply because it is fascinating reading everyone’s story. Usually, when we think about protests, we imagine people manifesting as a group, sharing common reasons to be there. But this project presents a more in-depth representation of objection and protest in India, by interviewing protestors from different backgrounds and help them make their voice heard.

We at round Lemon are so thankful for every artist that applied to our open call, and every institution that has supported us via social media. We couldn’t have organised this in under a month without your help!
